Part-time finance director for growing businesses

If your business has annual sales of up to £10m, you probably don’t need a full-time finance director yet, and you’re probably doing much of the finance job yourself. I give you board-level finance experience for a fixed monthly fee: forecasts, cashflow, reporting and a second opinion on the big decisions.

Signs it’s time

  • You’re doing the finance yourself, after a full day running the business
  • You’re opening, buying or refitting a site and need to know it will pay back
  • Your bank, investor or franchisor wants forecasts you don’t have
  • Profit looks fine on paper, but cash is always tight
  • Big decisions are made on gut feel because the numbers arrive too late
  • You plan to sell in the next few years and want the business to look its best

What I bring

Finance leadership I’ve done at scale, sized for an owner-managed business.

Board reporting
At a 1,100-site group I owned the monthly board pack and presented the business plan and budget to the chief executive. You get the same discipline in a short monthly pack: what happened, why, and what to do next.
Forecasts that hold up
Budgets, reforecasts and a three-year plan built the way lenders and investors expect, so they see a business that knows its numbers.
Cashflow control
A 13-week rolling cashflow forecast, the tool I introduced at group level, so you see pressure points weeks ahead.
Deals and funding
I’ve supported M&A work including due diligence, divestments, sale and leaseback, and a £2.2bn transaction. I bring that rigour to buying a site, refinancing or raising money.
Commercial decisions
Pricing, range, wage and loyalty models, and appraisals for new sites and refits, built on your own data.
An independent view
Someone who isn’t in the day-to-day, asking the questions that stop expensive mistakes.

Wholesale, working capital

The problem. A big new supply deal, but not enough warehouse space or working capital to deliver it safely.

What I did. I built cash-on-cash scenarios for every product, a working capital cashflow model, a stock flow model to find bottlenecks and a logistics costing model, plus a brochure for wholesalers.

How it works

  1. Discovery call. A free 30-minute conversation about your business, your plans and what’s getting in the way.
  2. Scope and fee. We agree what you need each month, from reporting and meetings to specific projects, and I confirm a fixed monthly fee in writing.
  3. The first 90 days. We get the numbers right and go after the quick wins: clean management accounts, a cashflow forecast, a clear view of each site and a list of savings to act on.
  4. Every month after that. A monthly pack and meeting, with me on hand in between for the decisions that can’t wait.

The Strategic plan starts from £1,000 a month, priced on what you need delivered rather than days in the office, and it comes with a pays-for-itself guarantee.

Questions about part-time FD support

What is a fractional finance director?

A fractional (or part-time) finance director does the job of an FD for a fraction of the time and cost. You get senior financial leadership, forecasting, reporting and funding support without a full-time salary.

How is this different from my accountant?

Most accountants look backwards: accounts, tax returns and compliance. A finance director looks forwards: cash, forecasts, pricing, investment and funding. On the Strategic plan I do both, so nothing falls between two advisers.

What size of business is this for?

Owner-managed businesses with annual sales of roughly £1.5m to £10m, often with several sites, growing fast enough that decisions need better numbers but not ready for a full-time finance director. At that size the owner is usually doing much of the finance job themselves.

How does the Strategic guarantee work?

At the start of a Strategic plan we agree a baseline from your last 12 months’ figures and a list of actions, such as correcting VAT, changing rotas, repricing, cutting card or supplier costs and planning tax. I log the value of each action as it lands and report it to you every quarter.

If that value hasn’t covered your fees by the end of the first 12 months, I keep working for you for free until it has. The guarantee applies to businesses with annual sales of £1.5m or more, where the agreed actions are put in place.

How much time will you spend on my business?

The plan is built around what gets delivered, not hours: monthly accounts and a board pack, a monthly meeting, forecasts kept up to date and time for projects. If you need more during a busy period, such as a funding round or an acquisition, we agree it upfront.

Can you help us raise finance or talk to the bank?

Yes. I prepare the forecasts, cashflow and commentary lenders and investors expect, and can join the meeting to answer the finance questions.
